Pirates Whyallaped by Redbacks

30 17 -197 to 5 4 -34

A fantastic forward performance by Chippenham’s token Aussie Stu “Whyalla” Mckay send Chippenham on their way to a record win, 191 – 33. With hands that must have been covered in glue Stu made some incredible marks and kicked some extraordinary goals, but he has to thank the rest of the team for some fantastic service. The midfield was marshaled well by Rob Kerr and Paul Conway, both frustrating the pirates with tenacious defense and pin point kicking to the forwards. Lee Tarn and reserve ruckman Tom Sobush were strong and committed, with Tarn a constant threat with him booming boot. Pete O’Neill and Tom Ingall ran the show at half forward using sheer pace to make the pirates defense look inexistent, until both picked up injuries late in the match. O’Neill suffering a sever blow to the head after getting sandwiched between 2 pirates.

Often overlooked in a high scoring game was the immense work of the Redbacks defense. Every attack seem to be smothered out before it started, and captain Tom Case was mesmeric at time in timing his runs to spoil attacks. Nick Hardick, Tom Sobush and Chris Matthews worked hard to spoil but also ran their hearts out on overlapping runs, supporting the midfield.

Chippenham entered the final quarter attempting to get the double hundred on the scoreboard, unfortunately some missed chances notable by Case who had support players in better positions, although he can be forgiven due to the fact he has never been near a goal while trying to score!. Joe Beardsmore on for a late cameo appearance after missing over a month with an injury had only been on the field for a minute when fantastic work on the floor and some near handballs by Aaron Gale and Stu Mckay set him up for a improbable goal from 30 meters before a harsh umpires call ruled it out as a throw.

Chippenham are now top of the Table and face the Sussex Swans in their next match
